EVERETT — Archbishop Murphy clinched the Cascade Conference girls soccer championship Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Cedarcrest and Red Wolves coach Denis Watts said that may just be the beginning for the Wildcats.
“They’ll be tough to beat,” Watts said. “We could face them again in the district (tournament).”
In fact, Cedarcrest, which lost 3-0 to Murphy earlier this season, could meet the Wildcats in the state tournament, as well. All four teams advancing out of the 2A District 1 tournament are seeded in the lower half of the state bracket.
“We are really proud of how the season went, but it has been a challenge, and tonight was not necessarily a fancy-finesse game against Cedarcrest,” Murphy head coach Dick Henderson said. “So much of the success of this team goes to assistant coach Eddie Fernandez who really is behind the scenes, but his training is outstanding.”
The two squads met in the quarterfinals in 2007 and the championship game in 2006 (Murphy won). The Wildcats placed third at state each of the past two seasons.
