Even socialites are cutting back

Worst hard times
The recession just got grimmer. Reality TV shows such as “Paris Hilton’s My New BFF” have been forced to slash their production budgets, meaning Hilton and her spray-tanned prospective pals will have to endure less-posh digs this season.
There is a silver lining. Viewers can no longer afford to piddle away cash on the perfume, sunglasses and other products hawked by Hilton on her show.
That layoff show: Speaking of hard times and reality TV, the Fox network plans a show that will let employees of troubled businesses decide which co-worker gets laid off.
The idea of giving so much power to employees was immediately denounced as socialism by the pundits at Fox News.
C’est justice: French authorities may start punishing people who illegally download music and movies by cutting off their Internet access for up to a year (Page A6).
When the digital pirates’ broadband connection is restored, their downloading will be restricted to French rock ‘n’ roll and “The Delicate Delinquent” (1957), starring Jerry Lewis.
