Spaghetti luncheon fundraiser helps Mill Creek seniors
More than 100 people attended The Mill Creek Senior Program Spaghetti Luncheon fundraiser in May. North Creek Retirement Community provided the food and $1,600 was raised for the Mill Creek Senior Program.
Monroe postal workers collect thousands of pounds of food
Monroe letter carriers, postal workers and volunteers worked hard during the National Letter Carriers’ Food Drive in May. Carriers and their teams picked up more than 11,300 pounds of food.
Sky Valley (Monroe) Food Bank volunteers unloaded and sorted more than 9,000 pounds in one afternoon.
The Sky Valley Food Bank is now providing food more than 5,000 times per month, at 10 meals each time, nearly double the number from last year. Letter carriers provided note cards and blue bags a few days before the drive and the community filled the bags with food and left them in mailboxes.
SCOUTING
Girl Scouts send supplies to Iraqi base laborers, school children
Junior Girl Scout Troop 41000 recently completed a community service project that sent school packets, stuffed animals and men’s shoes to base laborers and school children in Iraq.
Working with Maj. David Kalamen of Everett, who is currently serving his second tour of duty stationed in Iraq, the 13 girls in the troop conducted a neighborhood collection drive as well as monitored a community drop-off box that was kept as Silver Lake Video.
Their work resulted in donations of 88 notebooks, 800 pencils, 444 pencil top erasers, 85 pencil sharpeners, 14 pairs of men’s shoes and 348 stuffed animals.
Kalamen’s wife, Gina Kalamen, helped the girls complete the project by participating in the school packet packaging, as well as transporting the boxes of donations to the armory in Seattle to be sent to Iraq.

Marysville student is page in Olympia
Kristofer Davies, an eighth-grade student at Totem Middle School, recently served as a page to Sen. Steve Hobbs in Olympia.
Kristofer is the great-great-nephew of former director of pollution control, Wallace Bergeson, and his widow, Lois Bergeson. He is the son of Erik and Shari Davies of Marysville.
Everett Zonta Club honors local banker
Carol Nelson, president and chief executive officer of Cascade Financial Corp., was honored by the Zonta Club of Everett as the recipient of their 2009 Virginia Gullikson Award.
The Virginia Gullikson Award is named for a Zontian and well-known county resident who spent her life helping others. Candidates come from within Snohomish County and are volunteers who have worked to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women in the county.
Nelson has been recognized nationally for her success in achieving record profitability and growth. She has served as chairwoman of the board of United Way of Snohomish County and serves on the boards of Boys &Girls Club of Snohomish County, Snohomish County Economic Development Council and the Leadership Snohomish County Advisory Board.
She has also served as president of the Puget Sound Council of Camp Fire Boys and Girls. She has twice been named to a prestigious list of “25 Women to Watch,” being chosen from among nearly 4,700 senior officials from institutions of all sizes.
