ANACORTES — With two Squalicum runners on base and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday, Granite Falls’ 4-3 lead and postseason future were in jeopardy. But when a Squalicum batter hit the ball straight at Tigers’ pitcher Max Whitt, the junior easily completed the final out of the game and Granite Falls moved into the first round of the 2A District 1 tournament.
After three scoreless innings, Alex Cashman hit a double, Austin Dancer bunted a single and Whitt put the Tigers on the board with a single that scored both Cashman and Dancer. Brandon Brown, who finished the game 4-for-4, hit a single that allowed Whitt to cross the plate and give Granite Falls a 3-0 lead. The Tigers continued to score in the top of the fifth on a Colton Patterson RBI single.
Patterson batted 3-for-4 and pitched a solid game with four strikeouts in 42/3 innings, said Granite Falls coach Doug Engstrom.
The Storm fought back in the bottom of the fifth to score twice and added suspense in the bottom of the seventh when they scored on a RBI single.
Granite Falls plays Sehome today at 3 p.m. at Volunteer Park in Anacortes.
