‘Deserving Design’ host to appear at Seattle Design Center

Yip yapping: Atlanta-based Vern Yip, host of “Deserving Design” and a judge on “HGTV Design Star,” will be part of a public event April 25 at the Seattle Design Center.
Eye on Design 2009 allows ticketholders to browse 55 design center showrooms and meet one-on-one with high-end interior designers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be an opening presentation at 10 a.m. and a panel discussion at 3 p.m. featuring Yip.
Typically open only to members of the design trade and their clients, the design center is at 5701 Sixth Ave. S., Seattle. Tickets for the event are limited to 600 and cost $10. Register at www.seattledesigncenter.com. Call 800-497-7997 with questions.
Bees and more: The Washington State University Snohomish County Extension is offering three popular classes in the coming weeks in the auditorium at McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett. Fees for each class are $35.
Got bees? Learn about orchard mason bees as well as bumble bees, miners, diggers and others with WSU entomologist Dave Pehling from 9 a.m. to noon April 14. Learn how to make your own bee houses for several species of these beneficial insects and take home a small kit.
Composting. Learn how to reduce yard waste and enrich your soils by making compost with Snohomish County Master Gardener Sandy DeLisle, who will teach composting techniques, including worm bins, from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 28
Drip irrigation: Learn how to inexpensively plan, purchase and install a drip irrigation system for your vegetable or ornamental gardens with Snohomish County Master Gardener Jeff Thompson from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 6 to 9 p.m. May 12.

Everett Tilth: In March, Everett Tilth officially became a chapter of the Washington Tilth Association, a statewide organization dedicated to sustainably grown, locally produced food.
Members plan to promote sustainable gardens throughout Snohomish County through education, networking and local partnerships.
Expect to see gardening classes throughout the year, public education programs, informational booths at local events and eventually an annual garden tour, a demonstration garden, seasonal seed swaps and plant sales.

Save the date: The Snohomish County Master Gardener Foundation will hold its annual sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 2 at McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.
Master gardeners are growing more than 5,000 tomato plants — 100 varieties in all — in anticipation of the fundraiser, said master gardener and Snohomish County tomato expert Jeff Thompson.
This year’s sale will also feature a variety of herbs and vegetable starts, plus perennials, fuchsias, trees, shrubs, groundcovers, herbs and garden art from about a dozen specialty nurseries. Master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and share knowledge about vegetable gardening.
