MONROE — It was Marysville-Pilchuck’s third must-win game in three days, and once again the Tomahawks met the challenge.
Behind a solid pitching performance by Riley Fritz, and clutch hitting in the fifth inning, M-P snuck by Monroe 3-2 in a Wesco North softball tiebreaker game at Park Place Field in Monroe. The Tomahawks now face a fourth straight must-win scenario in a 4A District 1 play-in game against Kamiak at 4 p.m. Monday at Kamiak High School.
M-P’s three runs came in the fifth inning. Jessica Nielsen began the rally with a walk, and Sacha Clow, Jessica Tanigawa and Fritz each had RBI.
Monroe replied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but left the bases loaded for the second consecutive inning. The Bearcats again loaded the bases in the sixth, but failed to score.
“We were just one hit away from breaking it open,” Monroe head coach Curt Eskeback said. “We had our chances, and when you leave so many people on base its difficult. She (Fritz) has great location, but we put the ball in play. She only had two strikeouts.”
