A sign of the times

The state will soon erect electronic signs on U.S. 2 that will count the days since the last major accident on the highway between Everett and Stevens Pass, reminding everyone to drive with more care. “(U.S. 2) is heavily used and we have more than our fair share of in-a-hurry, stupid drivers,” said Fred Walser, chairman of the U.S. 2 Safety Coalition. (Page B1).

Perhaps a more effective sign would tell motorists, “Watch out for in-a-hurry, stupid drivers.”

Good day, sunshine: The Snohomish County PUD is helping fund solar energy projects at several local schools, at the Mukilteo City Hall and even at an ice cream parlor. Solar power here? Germany gets less sunlight than Western Washington but is a world leader in solar energy production (Page B1).

We’re sold. Set us up with a solar panel and we’ll plug our tanning bed into it.

States’ wrongs: On this day in history (Page A2):

* In 1822, Florida becomes a U.S. territory, securing for future generations a place where drunken college students can spend spring break.

* In 1867, the U.S. agrees to purchase Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. About 140 years later, Gov. Sarah Palin puts it on eBay.

* In 1870, Texas is readmitted to the union. But it leaves in a huff when it learns that Alaska actually is bigger.
