UW vs. SU postgame

Washington won big as expected, 87-60, but the win was nearly overshadowed by an injury.

Fortunately for the Huskies, Quincy Pondexter’s rib injury turned out to be not to serious, and Pondexter said he has not intention of missing Saturday’s game.

“I was praying to God in midair that I didn’t get hurt,” he said after the game before heading to get treatment. “It was a very scary moment for me . . I’m all right. I’m a tough kid.”

As for Saturday’s game, Pondexter was asked if he would play and said, “No doubt about it. I don’t think being paralyzed could stop me from playing that game.”

The game itself played out about as expected. The Huskies jumped ahead early and led by 23 at halftime. Jon Brockman led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds, though he played just 18 minutes. In fact, Isaiah Tomas’ 26 minutes were the most any Husky played, as Romar was able to get little-used reserves Artem Wallace, Scott Suggs and Joe Wolftinger into the game.

Washington shot 56.1 percent from the game, and out-rebounded the Redhawks 40-34 (which is almost a victory for SU given the Huskies’ rebounding dominance).

Depite the lopsided score, at least one Husky walked away impressed by Seattle U.

“That’s a good team,” Brockman said. “For just turning into a Division I team, being independent, they’ve had a great season. They’ve been in a lot of close games with some big-name teams, and it’s a rivalry that will get stronger and stronger as long as they keep it going. It’s something special for the city and it’s something that the city can really wrap itself around.”

SU coach Joe Callero had some big praise for the Huskies too.

“Give them all the credit in the world,” Callero said. “It realistically could be a final four team.”
