Arlington
Library invites teens to play video games
After school is out for the day on Wednesday, teens are welcome to come to the Arlington Library to study or play games such as “Rock Band.”
Games begin at 3 p.m. Those who want to bring their own video games to play are encouraged to do so.
Snacks are provided by the Arlington Friends of the Library.

Free health, finances workshops for seniors
Workshops to help seniors with health and financial issues are planned at the Abbott Wolfe Center for the Cascade Seniors.
Taught by Sandi McCaulley, the free workshops are set for 10 a.m. to noon today and 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the center on Darrington Street.

Snow continues to plague town
Darrington Mayor Joyce Jones said the weekend storm has brought the total snowfall in town to nearly 7 feet over the past few weeks.
It was raining on Monday, she said, and townspeople were clearing roofs as the rain made the snow heavier.
“We had our tremendous road crews out at 3 a.m. trying to deal with this,” Jones said. “We are running out of places to haul the snow.”
Jones said she has not seen as much snow since the 1940s.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day events scheduled
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Jan. 19, but several events in his honor are scheduled for next week.
Coach Herman Boone, who was played by actor Denzel Washington in the move “Remember the Titans,” is scheduled to speak at the Diversity Breakfast hosted by United Way of Snohomish County.
The event is set for 7 a.m. Tuesday at the Holiday Inn, 3105 Pine St. The breakfast is free, but registration is required by calling 425-374-5570 or e-mailing events@uwsc.org.
A rally and march to honor King is set for 10:30 a.m., also on Tuesday, at the Snohomish County Plaza, 3000 Wall St., Everett. A community celebration with Boone follows from noon to 1 p.m. at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center, 2000 Hewitt Ave.
Boone was the head coach at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va., after the school had been ordered to integrate.
To help people learn more about Boone, the Everett Public Library has scheduled a free screening of “Remember the Titans” at 2 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium at 2702 Hoyt Ave.
On Jan. 15, Myrlie Evers-Williams, the first full-time chairwoman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is scheduled to speak at 7 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th St. SW.
Evers-Williams, an author, is the widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers.

Everett NAACP meets each month on Tuesday
Officials with the Snohomish County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said the mission of the group is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all people and to seek to eliminate racial hatred and discrimination.
The group meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesdays of the month. The next meeting is Jan. 27, at the United Way of Snohomish County office, 3120 McDougall Ave., Everett.

Salvation Army offers meals and fellowship
Salvation Army of Everett hosts a meal and fellowship time at 5:15 p.m. most Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the dining hall at the organization’s offices, 2525 Rucker Ave.
Tailgate Ministries and Neighbors Who Care also are involved in the meal program, which feeds hundreds of people each week.

Lake Stevens
New rowing club launches on Saturday
North Cascades Crew is launching a new rowing club in Lake Stevens. A learn-to-row event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for anyone age 13 or older.
Register online or simply drop by the North Cove boat launch in downtown Lake Stevens. The cost is $10.

Students can apply for Lynnwood showcase
The deadline is approaching for students to apply to perform in the Lynnwood Student Showcase.
Participants perform in front of a live audience at Alderwood mall and receive a cash scholarship check. Dancers, singers, musicians, bands and performing artists are needed.
Middle- and high school-aged students who live within the Edmonds School District boundaries have until Friday to apply.
The City of Lynnwood Arts Commission, Lynnwood Rotary and Alderwood are presenting the fourth-annual Lynnwood Student Showcase on Thursday, Feb. 19, at Alderwood mall.
