EDMONDS — The Edmonds-Woodway wrestling team’s strategy for winning the Edmonds Invite was pretty simple: Get into as many championship contests as possible.

Steven Alfi won the 145-pound weight class by pin and Edmonds-Woodway placed a wrester in 10 of the 14 weight class championships to finish first with 253.5 points.

Jackson’s Jared Mead won the 125-pound weight class to help Jackson place second with 154.5 points.

Granite Falls placed third behind Andrew McKibben’s 10-1 major decision victory in the 285-pound weight class.

Edmonds-Woodway coach Mike Hanchett was the recipient of the 2009 Mike Hess Sportsmanship Award.

Shoreline Invitational: At Shoreline, Erik Ovens (152 pounds) and Jimmy Trull (215 pounds) of Bellevue earned pins to help the Wolverines hold off a push by O’Dea at the Shoreline Invitational. Brandon Leach (112 pounds) of Shorewood won his weight class by pinning Ellery Lanquin of Edmonds-Woodway.

Panther Classic At Snohomish, Stefan St. Marie of Snohomish defeated Tyler Enos of Todd Beamer in the 135-pound weight class 10-2, and Snohomish scored 215.5 points to place first at the Panther Classic. Kamiak placed second with 162 points.

West Seattle Tournament: At West Seattle, South Whidbey placed 5th at the West Seattle Tournament. David Monell won the 215-pound weight class and Trevor Romero won the 189-pound weight class to lead South Whidbey. Jordan Broyles was the runner-up in the 171-pound division. Cascade Conference member Cedarcrest placed 2nd.

Girls wrestling

Sedro-Woolley Invite: At Sedro-Woolley, Nelly Araburro of Jackson won the 185-pound division title at the Sedro-Woolley Invite. Jackson took fifth place overall.

Boys swimming

Kentridge Invitational: Kamiak placed second at the Kentridge Invitational on Saturday, behind a first place finish from Chris Lynch in the 100 breaststroke. Brian Michaels of Shorewood placed first in the 200 and 500 freestyles, breaking meet records in both events, and Shorewood also placed first in the 200 medley relay. Shorewood finished in third place, and Marsyville-Pilchuck placed fourth. Mercer Island took first place.
