No European plane for Air Force One

European jet builder Airbus says it won’t compete to build the next-generation Air Force One.

Well, duh: James Bond drives an Aston-Martin, and the U.S. president flies in a 747.

But here’s the thing: We thought all President Barack Obama needs in order to fly is a cape.

Two more “too-big-to-fail” institutions have fallen on hard times:

  • Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. His cable TV company is on the brink of bankruptcy and he’s dropped to No. 41 on the world’s-richest-person list. Guess this means Allen won’t be buying the Seattle P-I. The silver lining: That weird blob next door to the Seattle Center may be shredded and made into doormats.

  • The U.S. Postal Service. It’s asked Congress for permission to stop mail delivery on Saturdays. The silver lining: Your bills will arrive only five days a week.

Every once in a while, we Northwesterners need sunglasses to fend off harsh glare from the winter sun. You can check out our buyer’s guide.

Or you can fish under your car seat for the pair you bought, used once and lost last winter.
