Prep roundup: King’s looks like state title contender

Published 11:01 pm Tuesday, October 14, 2008

SHORELINE — The King’s Knights are playing like state champions, good thing for the rest of the Cascade Conference that they are a 1A school.

The Knights disposed of Cedarcrest Tuesday night using two early goals in defeating the Red Wolves 2-1 at Woolsey Stadium.

It was the second time the 1A Knights (9-1 in league, 11-1 overall) have defeated the 2A Red Wolves (8-2, 9-2-1) this season.

King’s defeated Cedarcrest at Cedarcrest High on September 23.

“They played very well. I’d be shocked if they were not state champions. I’m glad we’re not going to have to see them again,” Cedarcrest head coach Denis Watts said of the Knights, who finished fourth in the 1A state tournament last season.

The Knight’s also defeated previously unbeaten and 2007 state 2A third-place finisher Archbishop Murphy.

“I’m real happy with how the team looks right now. We set goals for our season and we’re meeting our goals within the conference. We’ll look onto state when this is over. I think our team is progressing like I hope it would,” King’s head coach Nicole Gabelein said.

Hillary Quinn got King’s on the board 12 minutes into the game scoring on an assist from Hillary Zevenbergen.

Cedarcrest countered with a Maggie Pleis goal five minutes later before the Knights’ Julia Crosby gave King’s the 2-1 lead in the 24th minute on an assist by Kendall Thoreson.

“Both teams played well. It was a very intense level of play. We matched up well,” Watts said of the two teams.

Watts also complimented both goalkeepers, King’s Maddy McDevitt (three saves) and Cedarcrest’s Kori Butterfield (10 saves).

“It was a good intense game. I felt good about the way we came out. We came out strong, looked real good as a team and we played a good well-rounded game,” Gabelein said.
