MONROE — The Everett girls soccer team came out firing and scored two goals in the second half to defeat Monroe 2-1 in a Wesco North game Tuesday at Monroe and clinch no worse than a tie for first place in the Wesco North standings.
Everett head coach Kosta Pitharoulis wasn’t sure when the Seagulls’ last won a league title, but suspected it might have been in 1993, when Everett went to state and finished fourth.
Pitharoulis was very pleased with the play of his team. One player in particular, Hannah Hawkins earned special mention.
“She’s really stepped it up a notch and she’s doing a great job for us,” Pitharoulis said. “You can tell she’s actually having a lot of fun out there and playing well at the same time.”
Hawkins, a defender, scored the second goal of the night for Everett (13-1-1 in league and overall). Cammie Monro netted the first in the 46th minute to put the Seagulls up after halftime. Meanwhile, Emily Nesting stood in goal for Everett.
In an interesting twist of fate, Meadowdale, a 3A school like Everett, clinched the Wesco South title Wednesday night.
When asked if he knew the stakes of the game, Pitharoulis quickly responded “Of course I know that. Going into it we knew what we had to do.”
Kelsey Dye scored the lone goal for Monroe (6-6-3) in the 75th minute. Dani Philippart was the goalkeeper for the Bearcats and, according to Pitharoulis, made some “great saves” throughout the contest.
“I thought Monroe played a really great game,” Pitharoulis said.
He then turned his attention to Everett’s showdown with second-place Lake Stevens on Thursday at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Vikings are hot on Everett’s heels, just one game (3 points) back in the standings. “I really do anticipate it being a tough game of two teams that are going to the district playoffs” and maybe going to state, Pitharoulis said. “It’s our senior night so all 10 of our seniors will be fired up.
“It should have a lot of action. Maybe not a lot of goals, but a lot of action.”
Cascade 1, Oak Harbor 0: At Everett, Taylor Gordon scored the Wesco North game’s only goal in the 47th minute off an assist by Jessica Stavick. Jessie Anderson was in goal for Cascade (5-7-4 league and overall). Oak Harbor’s (1-13-1) goalkeeper was not reported.
Snohomish 1, Marysville-Pilchuck 0: At Snohomish, Shillia Crosby got the lone goal of the match in the 67th minute off an assist from Melanie Bjornethun to give Snohomish the Wesco North win. Cori Brown got the shutout for the Panthers (6-8 in league and overall) and Keena Hernandez stood in goal for Marysville-Pilchuck (2-10-3).
Lake Stevens 5, Stanwood 0: At Lake Stevens, junior Kaleen Berg had two goals and two assists to lead Lake Stevens to the Wesco North win. Sandra Osborn scored the first goal in the third minute of the match and Taryn Wright and Randi Mielke also added goals for the Vikings (12-2-1 in league and overall). Kaitlin McKenzie recorded the shutout for Lake Stevens. The Spartans’ (7-4-4) goalkeeper was not reported.
