Prep volleyball/soccer: Monroe relies on defense to top Snohomish

SNOHOMISH — It may not have been the prettiest thing, but Monroe will take the win regardless against a stout Snohomish volleyball team.
The Monroe Bearcats defeated Snohomish 25-9, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21 Thursday in Wesco North play and proved that their loss to Kamiak two weeks ago is far behind them.
“We had that loss a couple weeks ago, and since that things have changed,” Monroe head coach April Munoz said. “We served that win to Kamiak up on a platter. We daily remind ourselves what we need to be doing. We focus on each game that is ahead of us.”
Monroe’s Kylin Munoz had her normal numbers in the kills department with 25, but it was her defensive presence that set her apart in this match — 23 digs to be exact. Kaitlyn Drew was phenomenal on defense as well, posting 51 assists and aiding the potent front-line attack of Monroe, which improved to 2-0 in the Wesco North and 7-1 overall.
For Snohomish, Joanna Balin and Megan Rice had 10 kills each, and Natalie Kaltbrunner contributed with 16 digs. Karla Nelson had 32 assists for the Panthers. Snohomish is now 0-1 in league, and 6-2 overall.
Oak Harbor 3, Arlington 1: At Arlington, Jessica Muzzall had four blocks and 13 kills in the come-from-behind Wesco North victory for Oak Harbor (1-1 league, 3-5 overall). Jennifer Jansen had 12 kills and Kim Mowbray had three kills and four blocks. Bre Covey of Arlington (0-2, 3-5) had 16 kills and teammate Marissa Elgarico had 21 digs.
Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Stanwood 1: At Stanwood, Brittany Fitzmaurice had 36 assists, Jenna Welsh had 14 kills and Jade Thompson had 42 digs as the Tomahawks (2-0 league, 5-3 overall) defeated the Spartans 25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23 in Wesco North action. Kelsey Kanehen had 12 kills to lead Stanwood (0-2, 5-3).
Lake Stevens 3, Cascade 2: At Everett, Ysabella Licciardi led Lake Stevens in kills with 13 in the Wesco North victory. Marchelle Bostic had 43 assists for Lake Stevens (2-0 league, 4-4 overall). Kaitie Brush of Cascade (0-2, 2-6) had 13 blocks and four kills.
King’s 3, Coupeville 0: At Coupeville, King’s (8-0 overall) swept Coupeville 25-21, 25-18, 25-15 to take the Cascade Conference victory. Anna Cesari led King’s with 20 assists and Laura Friar and Jordan Irish each added nine kills. Julie Huddleston had 19 assists and Cassie Lawson had 18 digs and three aces for Coupeville (1-7 in league, 2-7 overall).
Girls soccer
Kamiak 2, Shorewood 1: At Shoreline, Kamiak scored twice in the first three minutes then hung on for the Wesco South victory. Cassidy Seckman scored the first goal in the first minute with Hillary Hermes earning the assist. Two minutes later Hermes scored while Seckman picked up the assist. Louise Albin scored the only Shorewood goal (2-1 league, 8-1-1 overall) 42 minutes into the game. Tana Foster kept goal for Kamiak (2-0 league, 4-3 overall). Shorewood’s goalie was Madison Hollenbeck.
Shorecrest 1, Edmonds-Woodway 0: At Edmonds, junior outside midfielder Agen Heffernan knocked in a shot in the 76th minute as the Scots edged the Warriors in a Wesco South game. Shorecrest (1-2 in league, 5-3-2 overall) hit the post six times before breaking through in the closing minutes. Senior Caroline Towles recorded her sixth shutout for the Scots and Justine Ponton kept goal for E-W (0-3, 4-5-1).
Glacier Peak 6, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Snohomish, Meaghan Slighter scored two goals and tallied one assist and Miranda Granger and Malloy Leahy each added a goal and two assists as the Grizzlies (1-1 league, 4-4-1 overall) defeated the Hawks (2-1, 2-8) in Wesco South action. Samantha Long and Shelbey Stromerson also scored goals and Nicole Giovine recorded the shutout for Glacier Peak.
Jackson 3, Mariner 0: At Everett, Brianna Ellis scored the third goal in the 65th minute to put the Wesco South game on ice. Mariner goalkeeper Sandra Reyes held Jackson scoreless in the first half but was unable to fend off a Megan Bolmes goal in the 55th minute in on an assist from Denae Fitz. Ellen Favale scored the second Jackson goal at the 60-minute mark from an Ellis pass. Kayla Beer and K.C. Wilson played goal for Jackson, which improved to 3-0 in league and 8-1-1 overall. Mariner is now 0-2 in league and 0-8-1 overall.
Marysville-Pilchuck 1, Arlington 1: At Arlington, Jessica Van Loo scored two minutes in for Arlington, but Krista Riozzi scored the equalizer in the 60th minute and the two Wesco North teams played to a draw. Chelsea Boulton was the goalkeeper for the Eagles (4-4-2 in league and overall) while Lauren Schoonver stood in goal for the Tommies (1-7-2).
Monroe 0, Cascade 0 (2OT): At Everett, Cascade goalkeeper Jessie Anderson and Monroe goalkeeper Dani Philippart each recorded shutouts as Cascade (3-5-2 league and overall) and Monroe (4-3-3) drew the Wesco North contest.
Lake Stevens 4, Oak Harbor 1: At Oak Harbor, junior Kaleen Berg had a hat trick and Kinslee Isaman added a goal to lead Lake Stevens to the Wesco North win. Roni Tomlin had the lone goal for Oak Harbor (1-9 in league and overall). Kaitlin McKenzie and Megan Hemmingson split time in goal for the Vikings (9-1). Oak Harbor’s goal keeper was not reported.
Granite Falls 5, Coupeville 1: At Granite Falls, Katie Cashman cashed in for three goals and Kaitlin Howell and Rose Livermore added a goal apiece for Granite Falls in the Cascade Conference game. Granite Falls scored three goals in the first 10 minutes and added another one minutes later, with two assists by Cacia Stevens and another by Katyann Powers. Coupeville’s lone goal came from Courtney Boyd, unassisted. Granite Falls is now 5-4 in league and 7-4 overall. Coupeville is 1-8, 1-10.
Archbishop Murphy 11, Sultan 0: At Sultan, Maddy Huggins, Melissa von der Hofen and Brittany Allen each scored two goals in Archbishop Murphy’s Cascade Conference win. Alli Beard, Lindsey Bos, Kelly Gould, Tasha Pabisz, Meagan Duke and Caroline Brawner also scored a goal for the Wildcats. Archbishop Murphy’s Sarah Carratt and Julie Connelly kept Sultan scoreless. Sultan’s goalkeeper was not reported.
Cedarcrest 4, South Whidbey 1: At Duvall, senior Erin Kearney scored on a pass from Deena Ghazanfarpour in the sixth minute as the Red Wolves (7-2 in league, 8-2-1 overall) beat the Falcons (4-5, 4-5) in a Cascade Conference clash. Freshman Maggie Pleis scored on another assist from Ghazanfarpour in the 15th minute, forward Rachel Kevin found the back of the net in the 58th minute and Claire O’Donnell scored on an Emily Druschba assist (78th minute). Paige Miller scored South Whidbey’s lone goal in the 77th minute. Cedarcrest had 16 shots on Falcons keeper Natasha Kamps, while Kori Butterfield and Jordan Cleman split net duties for the Red Wolves.
King’s 5, Lakewood 2: At Shoreline, King’s scored in bunches in its Cascade Conference victory. Kendal Thoreson scored in the second minute with Hillary Zevenbergen assisting, then, two minutes later, Zevenbergen scored on a Hillary Quinn assist. In the 34th minute, Christina McCormick scored off a Zevenbergen assist, then, two minutes later, Zevenbergen scored her second goal off a Julia Crosby pass. Thoreson scored King’s final goal off a Anna Diede pass in the 74th minute. Anna Work and Alicia Stott scored Lakewood’s goals, both were unassisted. Carolyn Dapper tended goal for King’s (7-1 league, 9-1 overall). Miranda Head tended goal for Lakewood (3-6, 4-7).
