Prep volleyball: Everett hangs on to hand Lynnwood its first defeat, 3-2

EVERETT — Momentum can swing in a volleyball match like that.
Just ask the Everett volleyball team which jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over Lynnwood Thursday but then had to battle back in a fifth set to win the non-conference match 25-23, 25-11, 20-25, 17-25, 15-11 at Everett High School.
“Volleyball’s such a game of momentum,” Everett head coach Heather Burglund said.
The Seagulls (4-1 overall) jumped out early thanks to the serving of Kelli Wilner, who finished with three aces, and Emily Liger, who finished with 14 kills, three aces and eight digs.
“She’s been our kill leader,” Burglund said.
The Everett coach also pointed out the leadership of senior captain Mollie Postma, who finished with 33 assists and eight digs.
Jessika Barlow had 12 kills and nine digs to lead Lynnwood’s (3-1) dramatic come back.
“They’re a very scrappy team,” Burglund said of the Royals. “(They’re) excellent on defense … and a great opponent. We look forward to playing them.”
Annie Ogle had 11 kills for Lynnwood and Laycee Hill added 31 assists.
Momentum wasn’t the only thing that Burglund admitted helped Everett hand Lynnwood it’s first loss of the season.
“Home court advantage definitely played a part in it,” Burglund noted.
Oak Harbor 3, Jackson 0: At Oak Harbor, Jennifer Jansen had nine kills; Jessica Muzzall had nine kills, two blocks and three aces, and Melany Cone had 22 assists to lead Oak Harbor (2-3 overall) to a 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 non-league win. For Jackson (1-3), Haley Sharpe had 18 assists and three blocks, Christy Cain had eight kills and Leigh-Ann Haataja had four blocks.
Arlington 3, Mariner 1: At Arlington, after losing the first game 25-12, the Eagles (2-3 overall) rebounded by sweeping the next three, 25-12, 25-19, 25-17 to take the non-league match. Senior Kelsey Czaban led Arlington with 30 assists, sophomore Kenzie Jorgenson had 12 kills and senior Bre Covey added 11. Brittany Ruscha led the Marauders (0-5 overall) with 13 kills and Ho’Okena Varde added six.
Lake Stevens 3, Glacier Peak 0: At Lake Stevens, Marchelle Bostic had 32 assists and Lindsey Walter added seven kills to help Lake Stevens (2-3 overall) earn the non-league victory 25-13, 30-28, 25-16 over Glacier Peak (0-4).
Kamiak 3, Cascade 0: At Everett, Bailey Jones had eight kills and teammate Jessica Ramas chipped in with 12 digs as the Knights (4-0 overall) blanked the Bruins (1-4) 25-12, 25-19, 25-10 (1-4) in non-league action.
Monroe 3, Edmonds-Woodway 1: At Monroe, Kylin Munoz led Monroe (5-0 overall) to the 25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 25-17 non-conference victory with 29 kills, nine digs and three aces. Bearcat Kaitlyn Drew had 57 assists and Kendal Munoz added eight kills. Leigh Fishback had 37 assists and Alex Storino added 28 digs for Edmonds-Woodway (2-2).
Snohomish 3, Meadowdale 0: At Snohomish, Joanna Balin had 13 kills and Madeline Fouts added 12 as the Panthers (4-1 overall) defeated the Mavericks 25-21, 25-10, 25-17 in non-conference action. Madi Seeger had 17 digs and Lynsey Rohrbach added nine kills for Meadowdale (0-3).
Stanwood 3, Mountlake Terrace 2: At Stanwood, the Spartans edged out Mountlake Terrace 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 18-16 for the non-conference victory. Chelsea Campbell led the Spartans (5-0 overall) with 38 assists. Leah Titus added 19 digs and Kaci Jones had 12 kills. Mountlake Terrace (2-3) was led by Christine Jenson (47 assists), Leah Lechtenberg (24 kills) and Stephanie McGee (36 digs).
Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Shorecrest 1: At Marysville, M-P (2-3 overall) defeated Shorecrest (1-3) 25-19, 19-25, 27-25, 25-22 in a non-conference match at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. Mikayla LaRosa had 16 kills, three blocks and three aces, Jade Thompson had 34 digs and two aces and Emily Boerger added eight kills for the Tommies. For Shorecrest, Gloria Tseng had 14 kills, Jamie McDonald had 10 kills and Kerry Clavadetscher had 18 assists, six kills and 19 digs.
Archbishop Murphy 3, Lakewood 0: At Marysville, Archbishop Murphy (3-0 overall) had 27 kills, 22 assists and 11 aces to earn the Cascade Conference win 25-6, 25-16, 25-12 over Lakewood (0-3).
Cedarcrest 3, Granite Falls 0: At Duvall, Shannon Bailey, with 17 kills and four aces, helped Cedarcrest (2-1 league, 3-1 overall) to the 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 Cascade Conference win over Granite Falls (1-2, 1-2). Other notable players for Cedarcrest were Sara Houser (eight kills), Jessica Knoth (seven kills) and Lindsey Smith (24 assists). Audrey Murphy led Granite Falls with nine kills.
Coupeville 3, Sultan 0: At Sultan, Julie Huddleston had 15 assists and five digs and Linde Maertens had 11 kills as the Wolves (1-2 league, 2-3 overall) defeated the Turks (0-3, 0-3) 25-15, 25-16, 25-18 in Cascade Conference action.
King’s 3, South Whidbey 0: At Shoreline, Anna Cesari’s 36 assists and three aces helped lead King’s (3-0) to the 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 Cascade Conference victory over South Whidbey (2-1). Laura Friar had 16 kills and Jordan Irish added 10 kills for King’s.
Darrington 3, Concrete 0: At Concrete, Darrington (3-0 league, 3-1 overall) swept all three matches to take the 25-18, 25-9, 25-7 Northwest 1A/2B win over Concrete (0-1, 0-2). Mandy Powell had 14 aces and seven kills for the Loggers and teammate Jill Goldman was 7-for-7 serving.
La Conner 3, Shoreline Christian 0: At Shoreline, La Conner (1-0 overall) swept Shoreline Christian to earn the 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 Northwest 1A/2B win. Megan Bauman led Shoreline Christian (2-1 league, 3-1 overall) with 14 digs and Angie DeKoekkoek added seven kills.
