Hoops: Shorecrest finishes Everett’s district run

ARLINGTON — Jocelyn Riordan scored 11 of her game-high 15 points in the third-quarter as Shorecrest expanded a three-point halftime lead to 14 en route to a 50-35 victory over Everett in a 3A District 1 girls basketball consolation game Tuesday at Arlington High School.

The win sends Shorecrest into another loser-out game against Arlington at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Arlington gym.

Shorecrest maintained its advantage at the line in the fourth quarter, scoring all of its eight points on free throws. Caroline Towles led the Scots, going 4-for-5 from the line in the last period.

Gloria Tseng, who was 5-for-8 from the field, scored 13 points for the Scots.

Everett shot well from the line (7-for-10), but was cold from the floor, making just 11 of 35 from two-point range and two of 18 from beyond the 3-point arc. Shorecrest was slightly better at 13-for-31 and 3-for-17.

Arlington 58, Mt. Vernon 52: At Arlington, Quinn Kesselring scored eight of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter as Arlington came from behind to oust Mt. Vernon from the 3A District 1 playoffs. Arlington plays Shorecrest in another loser-out game at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Arlington gym. Sheryl Scheppele scored 16 points for the Eagles and was 4-for-9 from 3-point range. Arlington was 6-for-6 on free throws in the fourth period.

Archbishop Murphy 60, South Whidbey 50: At Mt. Vernon, Jared Smith (6-for-8) and J.D. Melton (3-for-4), who also had 13 rebounds, were a combined 9-for-12 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter as Murphy pulled away to the 2A District 1 playoff victory. Murphy had lost twice to South Whidbey during the regular season before eliminating the Falcons from the district tournament. The Wildcdats play Cedarcrest in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Vernon High School. Those two schools split their regular-season series, each winning on its home floor. Murphy is seeking its first 2A state berth. The Wildcats previously went to state as a 1A school. South Whidbey’s Parker Barnett led all scorers with 20 points.
