Rayner pitches no-hitter for Arlington

ARLINGTON — It didn’t take Christina Rayner long to remind the Arlington softball team just what it had been missing.

The standout pitcher — who was absent from the Eagles’ first four games of the season because she played in an international tournament in Taiwan — threw a no-hitter in her first start of the season Saturday. Rayner struck out nine batters and allowed just two base runners over the full seven innings of a 7-0 defeat of Shorecrest.

“It was nice to have her back,” head coach Daniel Eng said. “I think it’s safe to say she’ll be in the circle most of the time from here on out.”

Rayner had been playing with Northwest Exposure, a team of Washington state high-school standouts, at an invitation-only tournament in Taiwan. The team played the Taiwan Olympic team.

After returning, Rayner had to participate in 10 practices before becoming eligible. Her team was 2-2 without her.

She walked one batter in the first inning Saturday, then another Shorecrest batter reached on an error in the fourth. But that was all Shorecrest could manage.

“She actually looked a bit rusty, just because she hadn’t been throwing in game situations,” Eng said. “But she was certainly good enough.”
