O’Neill pitches Meadowdale by Lake Stevens

LYNNWOOD — The Meadowdale coaches had a simple message for the Maverick players before Saturday’s non-league baseball game with Lake Stevens: Just compete.

“We’ve been playing really inconsistently lately and the one thing we’ve seen from the (teams from) the Wesco North is that they know how to compete,” Meadowdale coach Bill Hummel after his team defeated the Vikings 5-2.

“That was the message for our kids today and I’m really happy with we (responded).”

Meadowdale starter Roger O’Neill pitched five scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve to 1-0 on the season.

Chase Anselment had a pair of doubles with an RBI and a run scored and Jake Haight was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

“Jake Haight has been a pleasant surprise,” added Hummel who noted that Haight is 7-for-10 at the plate on the season. “He’s primarily a pitcher and last year he hit the ball hard on occasion, but this year he’s just hammering the ball.”

Darren Iseri took the loss for the Vikings. He also doubled.
