Auditor’s report lauds city
The state auditor’s office has given the city of Lake Stevens a clean bill of health for its finances and record-keeping for 2005 and 2006.
This marks the 11th straight year that Lake Stevens has received a clean report, according to the city.

Fire department wins grant for equipment
Lake Stevens Fire District 8 was awarded more than $173,000 from the federal government to buy new equipment, officials said.
The money, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grants, will be used to buy new breathing equipment, deputy chief Dave Lingenfelter said.
The new equipment is more compatible with that of other fire districts in the county, he said.
The grants enable local fire departments and emergency medical-services organizations to purchase or receive training, conduct first-responder health and safety programs and buy equipment and response vehicles, said Mike Howard, a FEMA regional spokesman. The grants also support regional projects in which multiple organizations serving more than one local jurisdiction benefit directly from activities put in place with grant funds.
Mukilteo
City solicits bids on new $7 million City Hall
Construction companies can now submit bids for building Mukilteo’s new city hall.
Sealed bids are being accepted until Feb. 20 at the current City Hall, 4480 Chennault Beach Road.
Bidders can discuss the new city hall with the project’s design team at a meeting scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today at the existing City Hall.
The new city hall, to be built on the corner of Cyrus Way and Harbour Pointe Boulevard, is estimated to cost just over $7 million.
The two-story building is planned to have a slanted roof on one side and a flat roof on the other. The two sides will be split by a large, wedgelike entryway to separate the public gathering space from city offices.
The city hall will have 18,000 square feet of space inside. However, only 15,000 square feet will initially be finished.
Construction on the remaining 3,000 square feet of office space, in the southwest corner of the building, is planned to be finished as the city staff grows and needs more room.

Tiny terrier has spot at Westminster show
A Snohomish County dog is in the running at the nation’s most well-known dog show.
A toy fox terrier from Lynnwood is scheduled to compete Tuesday at the Westminster Kennel Club 132nd Annual Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The 2-year-old dog is jointly owned by two men from Lynnwood and Camano Island and a Lake Stevens woman. The canine’s father was a champion, and his sister and his son are also slated to compete at Westminster.

The winter-spring 2008 edition of Marysville Messenger city newsletter, which includes the Parks and Recreation Activity Guide, is now available.
The Messenger contains city news and registration information for upcoming seasonal parks and recreation classes and activities.

The Marysville Community Food Bank is in need of volunteers.
The food bank needs people to unload trucks, pick up donations, clean and help with data entry on the computer.

Monroe
City retains Skyhawks to offer sports programs
The City Council on Tuesday approved a 2008 service agreement with Skyhawks, a Spokane-based company.
As it did in 2007, the company plans to offer youth sports programs this summer at city parks. The city will get part of the registration fees. In 2007, the sports programs generated about $1,600 for the city.

Help city staff prepare for a disaster situation
The city plans to organize a group of volunteers to help city staff prepare for and deal with disasters. Volunteers are expected to answer phones, use amateur radio communications, do clerical work and keep data organized.

New city engineer sought
The City Council on Tuesday approved a contract with the Prothman Co. of Bellevue for recruiting a new city engineer. The contract will not exceed $20,000.
City engineer Tom Hansen recently announced his resignation, and the city is looking for a replacement.
If the new engineer gets terminated for cause within two years, Prothman will find another replacement for no additional fee.

Public safety meeting Tuesday
Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon, Sheriff John Lovick and County Council Vice Chairman Mike Cooper plan to hold the first in a series of public safety town hall meetings today in Edmonds.
The meeting is planned from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the South County Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave.
Topics to be discussed include reducing crime and graffiti and preparing for emergencies.

Downtown parking forum Tuesday
A public forum on downtown parking is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Everett Station’s Weyerhaeuser Room, 3201 Smith Ave.
Consultants examining downtown parking are expected to give recommendations on developing a parking management strategy in March.
Possible recommendations include installing parking meters, changing time limits and increasing fines for parking violations.
South Forest Park group to discuss healthy aging
The South Forest Park Neighborhood Association is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 4634 Alger Ave.
Kamilia Dunsky of Senior Services of Snohomish County is scheduled to speak about ways to remain healthy while aging, including relaxation and a positive attitude.
