Last day of school now June 27 in Shoreline

Because school was closed March 1 for snow, the Shoreline School District has missed seven days of snow because of weather. The last day of school is now June 27, a half-day. June 26 is a full day.

The other snow makeup days are half days March 16, May 14 and June 11 and a full day June 25.

Floretum Garden Club offers scholarship

The Floretum Garden Club of Edmonds is offering two scholarships of $1,000 each to 2007 high school graduates, community college students, or individuals planning careers in a horticultural field.

Applicants will be selected based on:

• Interest in horticulture, floral design, landscape design, botany, forestry or a related field.

• Financial need.

• U. S. citizenship.

• Activities and achievements in school and community.

The recipient may attend any community college, college or university in the state. Scholarship application forms are available from school scholarship offices, the horticulture department or by contacting the Floretum Garden Club’s Scholarship Committee chairperson Joyce Johnson at JoyceJohnson310@comcast.net or 425-774-7865. The deadline for applications is April 17, 2007.

Local students attend Biotech Expo

The Seventh Annual Student Biotechnology Expo was held March 5, at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, with 300 students from thirteen area public and private high schools competing, including Shorewood and Shorecrest High School students.

Over 300 students presented science projects they have been working on for months under the mentorship of professional scientists from regional biomedical research laboratories.

Shorewood projects include a molecular model that uses a shop vac to illustrate aspects of a nicotine receptor, a research project a student did working in a Leishmaniasis lab doing high level lab work with plasmids and inserting genes, and a research project using computer models used to choose vaccine candidates from DNA sequencing projects. National Merit finalist announced

Brandon Taniguchi, senior at Shoreline Christian School, is a finalist in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program. In the next few weeks, the selection of some 8,200 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of more than 16,000 finalists will be determined and these winners will receive scholarship offers during the month of March.

Shoreline Christian School has had National Merit Scholarship Finalists for the last six years in a row.

Professional Photographers of Washington scholarship

The Professional Photographers of Washington is accepting applications for the 2007 Student Photographer of the Year Award, open to all high school seniors in the state who will graduate in 2007. One student will win a $1000 scholarship grant, which will be used to further study photography.

A panel of professional photographers who are members of the Professional Photographers of Washington will select the finalists.

The student will be chosen based on photographic and scholastic studies, and the wish to continue photography studies.
