Arlington
Council retreat set for La Conner
The City Council will meet in its annual retreat this weekend starting with a dinner at 6 p.m. Friday in the Nell Thorn Restaurant at La Conner Country Inn, 107 S. Second St., La Conner.
Formal discussions are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the La Conner inn. All sessions also are open to the public, but no official action will be taken.

Darrington
Nations to replace Roselli on council
Frankie Nations has been appointed to replace John Roselli on the Town Council. Roselli stepped down recently, although his term was not due to expire until 2007.
Edmonds
Arts commission seeks applicants
The Edmonds Arts Commission is seeking applicants for a four-year term on its volunteer board. This opening is for a person with professional experience in the performing arts, including music, dance or theater.

Art and music at Zippy’s downtown

Learn to submit chemical reports
The Snohomish County Local Emergency Planning Committee plans a chemical reporting workshop from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management Building 211, 3509 109th St. SW, Everett.
Representatives from companies and retail stores that use chemicals are encouraged to attend. Register by Friday by calling 425-423-7635. Class size is limited to 40 people.
Island County
Talk on Langley’s feminist history
Margaret Robe Summitt will talk about the 1919 feminist upset election in Langley, when the Whidbey Island town ended up with a woman mayor and an all-woman council, at 7 p.m. today when the South Whidbey Historical Society meets.
Summitt is editor of The Sounder, a quarterly research publication of the Sno-Isle is titled “The Domestication of Langley.”
The meeting will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, 18341 Highway 525, Freeland. The public is welcome. A $2 donation is requested.
Lake Stevens
Library to add Thursday hours
The Lake Stevens Library will increase its hours beginning Feb. 5. The library will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, in addition to its other scheduled days. Currently, the library, at 1804 Main St., is closed on Thursdays and Sundays.
Lynnwood
City Council has new member
Eduardo dos Remedios was appointed to the Lynnwood City Council on Tuesday to replace Don Gough, who was elected mayor in November.
A Lynnwood resident for 21 years, dos Remedios was selected from among 14 applicants for the position. He is chairman of the city’s civil service commission.
Previously, he worked at Seattle’s Regence BlueShield as a general accounting supervisor, and served on the city’s diversity task force. He immigrated to the United States in 1964 and served in the U.S. Army.
Marysville
Discover airport and security tips
Airport and security tips will be offered during a free presentation at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ken Baxter Senior-Community Center, 514 Delta Ave., Marysville.
The center and Smokey Point Travel will present the session on safe travel. The tips will include what is acceptable to take to the airport, parking and pre-airport arrangements. The presentation is open to all ages.

Senior center plans open house
The East County Senior Center hosts its annual open house from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at 824 Village Way.

Council members meet in Olympia
The Mukilteo City Council meets with state legislators in Olympia today to discuss issues of mutual interest.
The luncheon meeting is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. at Anthony’s Homeport, 704 Columbia St. NW, Olympia.

Stanwood
Industry, park tax on council agenda
The City Council will meet at 7 p.m. today at City Hall to discuss revising permitted uses in the city’s light industrial zones.
The proposal would limit the size of any single retailer in that zone to no more than 50,000 square feet, ruling out large retailers such as Wal-Mart. The proposal does not limit the size of other listed uses in that zone.
Also on the agenda is a discussion led by Mayor Dianne White about trying to form a parks and recreation taxing district.
