Sign doesn’t reflect city’s character

In regard to the gateway sign proposed to go up in 2005, I personally think it is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen. No offense to the artist, but it looks more like the gateway to hell rather than Snohomish.
I don’t claim to be an art connoisseur, but in my opinion it is just plain horrid. Is there something I am missing, perhaps hidden images I am not finding? I have lived in Snohomish my entire life and I fail to see how this is supposed to represent Snohomish’s “character and image” and “attract more tourists.” Surely with all the fledgling and accomplished artists in the area, a sign with more relevant ties to the history and future of the town could have been painted. It is too bad the competition did not produce better results. Snohomish deserves a better representation and allocation of funds than this.
