Public comment sought on funding for transportation projects

EVERETT — Snohomish County projects are in line to receive $70 million in federal grants, 10 percent of the $700 million that will be distributed by the Puget Sound Regional Council.
In all, the draft regional Transportation Improvement Program includes most all major projects under way in the region through 2020, worth a total of $4.5 billion. The plan is open for public comment this month.
The regional council distributes federal transportation dollars to projects in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties. About a third of the funds represented in the transportation plan come from the Federal Highway Administration and two-thirds from the Federal Transit Administration.
In Snohomish County, the work list includes overlay projects, bicycle and pedestrian pathways, the Grand Avenue Park pedestrian bridge to Everett’s waterfront, adaptive signal controls in the Lynnwood area, and widening Highway 9 south of Snohomish, among other hot topics.
Community Transit is in line for one of the 10 largest awards, at more than $24 million, to help purchase buses and ride-share vehicles.
Smaller awards range from $5 million for Community Transit’s Swift II project to $60,000 for a bicycle and pedestrian path along Highway 526 in Mukilteo.

A complete list of projects with more detailed information is available online at www.psrc.org/transportation/tip, including an interactive map pinpointing each project.
Public comment closes Oct. 27.
