CENTRALIA — Auburn Mountainview right-hander Nick Brooks stymied the Glacier Peak offense, giving up just three hits and striking out 10 in a complete-game shutout as the Lions knocked the Grizzlies out of the 3A state tournament.

Grizzlies starter Tanner Braun also surrendered just three hits and struck out six to nearly match Brooks in the pitchers’ duel and Glacier Peak head coach Bob Blair noted that the two starters were very similar in stature and style.

“(Brooks) was almost a mirror image of Tanner,” Blair said. “They’re both 6-2, 6-3, 210-220 pounds, just big hard-throwing (right-handers). They couldn’t be more identical.”

Lions catcher Brice McCulloch drove in a run in the second and Auburn Mountainview scored unearned run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Glacier Peak had runners in scoring position in the second and fourth innings, but couldn’t manage a key hit off Brooks.
