Brian King earns academic honor, Noah Juulsen heads to St. John’s

EVERETT – It’s been just a week since the Everett Silvertips were eliminated from the playoffs in four straight games by the rival Seattle Thunderbirds, but the news continues to roll on.

Besides the biggest bombshell – that being Tuesday’s announcement that head coach Kevin Constantine’s contract would not be renewed – there are some things of a positive nature for Tips fans.

Carter Hart joined the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Philadelphia Flyers’ AHL affiliate Sunday while Noah Juulsen was sent to the AHL’s St. John’s IceCaps by the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.

Also on Thursday the Western Hockey League announced that second-year forward Brian King was named the Western Conference Scholastic Athlete of the Year. King, a 1999-born forward from Colorado, will compete against Eastern Conference nominee Adam Kedlec of Prince Albert at the WHL Awards ceremony May 3 in Calgary.

“Brian’s dedication to his education is strong and he has made his course work a priority,” Silvertips Education Advisor Darren Parsons said in a press release issued by the league. “He has done an amazing job meeting his course work deadlines and his submissions of assignments are always on time or ahead of schedule. Brian has done an excellent job combining his high academic standards to the rigors of playing in the Western Hockey League, which is not easy to do.”

King is on track to be named valedictorian at Everett High in June and was inducted into the National Honor Society this school year. He scored 1490 on the SAT and has been known to tutor his teammates when they need help. He’s the second straight Tips player to earn the Western Conference nod as Tristen Pfeifer was the honoree last season.

Juulsen officially got word Thursday that he was headed for St. John’s. He wasn’t sure of the plan during exit meetings on Saturday, but word came out earlier this week that he was going to Montreal.

Meanwhile, Hart has generated plenty of excitement among Flyers fans with his arrival in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It doesn’t sound he is expected to play in the Phantoms’ playoff series that begins Friday against the Hershey Bears, but his mantra is to continue to “trust the process.”

“I think I got the sense that I’m just here to experience this area,” Hart said in an article posted to CSNPhilly.com. “I’ve never been to Lehigh Valley. It’s nice to see the building, get to know the players, get to know the coaching staff, take it all in and learn from the pros.”

Juulsen is a 1997-born defenseman who figures to play professionally next season and won’t return to Everett. As a 1998-born goaltender Hart has to return to Everett next fall unless he makes the Flyers roster out of training camp.
