LAS VEGAS — Stanwood’s Mason Phillips captured the 138-pound Greco-Roman championship at the Western Junior Regional wrestling tournament on Wednesday at South Point Casino.
Phillips, who won the Greco-Roman national championship at the USA Wrestling Cadet & Junior Nationals last summer, rampaged through the field on Wednesday, winning his first three bouts via technicall fall following an opening-round bye.
In the final, Phillips pinned Jacob Garcia, a Cadet Greco-Roman All-American from Arizona, in 3 minutes, 33 seconds.
The 18-man bracket also included another Washington native in TJ Baun, a two-time 1A state champion from Colville.
Phillips will compete in freestyle on Thursday.
