Poll results: It’s boom or bust on Huskies softball

It seems to be boom or bust with regards to opinions on the University of Washington softball team.

This week’s reader poll was about the Huskies, as they begin play at the Women’s College World Series on Thursday. Washington, ranked sixth nationally, opens against No. 3 Oregon at 4 p.m. in the first game of it’s four-team, double-elimination bracket that also includes No. 10 and defending national champion Oklahoma, as well as No. 15 Baylor. The team that emerges from the bracket will face the winner of the other bracket — containing No. 1 Florida, No. 5 UCLA, No. 9 Texas A&M and No. 13 LSU — in a best-of-three series for the national championship.

Washington is a top program, having claimed the national title in 2009. However, the Huskies are not considered the front runners, as they are the fourth-highest ranked team among the eight participants.

So how do responders think Washington will do? Have a look:

The popular responses were at the extremes, with nearly half the voters believing Washington will emerge as champion, and nearly half believing the Huskies won’t get out of their bracket.

And don’t forget that there’s a local angle to Washington’s involvement. Snohomish High School graduate Trysten Melhart is a starter for the Huskies, while fellow Panthers alum Alyssa Simons is also on Washington’s roster.

Games are being televised on ESPN and ESPN2.
