Edmonds-Woodway girls soccer beats Cascade in South showdown

EDMONDS — Edmonds-Woodway head coach Bill LeCompte likes the offensive surge he’s seeing from his team.
While the Warriors’ two goals Thursday in a 2-1 win over Cascade (6-4-1 league, 7-4-1 overall) may not seem like a ton, they were enough to upend the Bruins, a team that entered alone in
second in the Wesco South division. More importantly for LeCompte he’s seeing a trend starting to develop for the Warriors (6-3-1, 6-4-2).
“We’re finally finding a way to put the ball in the net which was something we struggled with early on,” said LeCompte. “I think we’ve always been playing well, but we’re just starting to finish off our opportunities now. A lot of the passing lanes that you want to see that come from being more balanced are there.”
Edmonds-Woodway built a 2-0 lead over the Bruins behind goals from Cameron McCarthy and Rylee Peterson. McCarthy opened the scoring in the 24th minute when she took a pass from Rylee Peterson and found herself in the clear with a one-on-one against Cascade’s keeper, which she was able to win. In the early part of the second half, Peterson finished off her breakaway chance by putting the rebound by the Bruins’ Rachel Leupold after her initial shot attempt was saved.
Cascade answered in the 48th minute when freshman midfielder Claire Nelson took control of an Edmonds-Woodway clear attempt after the Bruins corner kick and rattled a shot past the Warriors’ Kiera Towell.
Towell finished with six saves and the victory as the Warriors allowed few chances after Nelson’s goal.
But it all came back to the offense capitalizing on its early chances in the eyes of the Warriors’ coach.
And now with back-to-back games against winless Mariner, Edmonds-Woodway has an excellent shot to climb up the league standings.
“We’re right in the middle of it all right now,” confirmed LeCompte. “I think our defense has done an amazing job for us keeping us close … And offensively we’ve started to really figure things out.”
