Prep football: Shorecrest 28, Everett 7

SHORELINE — With a pair of junior running backs named Keegan leading the way, Shorecrest ran over Everett to the tune of 264 yards and a 28-7 Wesco 3A victory Friday night.

Keegan Lockler provided most of the yards — rushing 13 times for 187 yards — and teammate Keegan Small did the scoring damage with three trips to the end zone on his 10 carries for 50 yards.

“The ground game was definitely key for us,” said Shorecrest assistant coach Tyler Martin.

It was a matchup that pitted two teams with playoff aspirations and just a half game separating them in the league standings. Also on the coaches minds was last year’s finish in which both squads wound up in a three-way tie for a playoff spot along with Mountlake Terrace.

Much of the focus this week for Shorecrest was on taking control of its own destiny, according to Martin. “This definitely puts us in great position for a playoff spot in Wesco,” Martin said.

Shorecrest also did a good job defensively against the dynamic Everett offense, allowing the lone second half score which came on a touchdown pass from Seagulls quarterback Riley Ayers and yielding just 37 total yards in the second half.

The senior Ayers finished 10-for-20 with 152 yards passing. He also had a touchdown pass and an interception on his ledger.

“They had a lot of different sets, different schemes. (The focus was) just making sure we could defend all of the different formations they were going to throw at us,” added Martin.
