Veteran center Manraj Hayer had to be helped off the ice during the morning session. Hayer went down hard after turning into a big hit by Jesse Mychan in open ice. Not sure about the severity of the injury.
Now for some players who caught my eye over the course of these three days. First, the returning players/older guys:
– Ryan Harrison, C, 92. Harrison was flying all over the ice. I’m told he’s improved his flexibility, but whatever the reason is his mobility is up a notch. He also scored on some nice shots.
– Jari Erricson, LW, 94. He just does what he does, being tenacious and putting himself into the areas to score. He just seemed to be doing it more effectively.
– Vladimir Dolnik, LW, 93. He has some size, skates well, plays hard and is a willing shooter. The new Euro will be a useful player for the Tips this season.
– Luke Siemens, G, 92. He’s in a battle to retain his roster spot, but he didn’t hurt his chances at all, looking aggressive and sharp.
Next the rookie hopefuls/prospects:
– Carson Stadnyk, C, 95. Wow, what an eye-opening camp he had. An eighth-round bantam draft pick in 2010, I didn’t really notice him at last year’s training camp. But he was the pick of the 16-year-old forwards, making things happen and scoring goals. He’s not really a candidate to make the team this year because he’s still very slight, but he definitely put himself on the map.
– Ty Mappin, C, 96. Everett’s first-round pick in this year’s bantam draft definitely lived up to the hype. He wore down a bit as camp progressed, but he showed goal-scoring ability, vision and defensive responsibility.
– Darian Henry, D, 94. Not flashy, but played a solid game while squaring off against veteran opposition throughout camp. He’s still very lean, but he probably solidified his chances for earning a roster spot.
– Austin Lotz/Casey Parker, G, 95. Everett’s two goalie draft picks from 2010 were pretty average at last year’s camp. Both were considerably better this year as they eliminated all soft goals. The goaltending overall was very good at this year’s camp.
The camp-concluding Green vs. White game is at 1 p.m. Sunday. Expect to see the vets in that one.
