Bend elbows, not fingers: Taking a cue from the Obama White House, leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties in Snohomish County met this week for a friendly “beer summit” at an Outback Steakhouse in Bothell.

Since the event was intended to be nonpartisan, the party chairmen tactfully refrained from renewing the age-old “tastes great/less filling” debate.

Still, they’re on to something. Perhaps the Everett School Board should consider serving beer at its meetings. But in plastic cups.

Old myths die hard: The Evergreen State Fair continues today at the fairgrounds in Monroe. Among today’s events is a concert by Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary at 7 p.m.

A group of college-age supporters of Ron Paul, R-Hey, Over Here; I’m Still Running, planned to attend, but changed their minds when they learned that “Puff the Magic Dragon” never was about marijuana.

Irene, good night: Although now a tropical storm, Hurricane Irene left behind billions of dollars in damage along the East Coast.

Embarrassed by our mild summer, Snohomish County residents braced today for the impact of Morning Fog Bert.
