Workers at IKEA’s factory in Virginia voted to join a union — the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which represents thousands of Boeing employees in Everett.

In the wake of the union vote, IKEA reportedly is studying a plan to move manufacturing of garden furniture, bookcases and curtain accessories to South Carolina.

Status symbol: Cellphones tell us the time, but the Swiss watch industry says that wristwatches give us something more important: status.

Destiny denied: Just four games away from making baseball history, the Mariners fell short Wednesday, routing the New York Yankees to snap their 17-game losing streak. The win means the 1988 Baltimore Orioles’ 21-game losing streak remains tops in American League history.

Oh, well; at least the Mariners now have a new goal to chase: the league-record 20-game winning streak by the 2002 Oakland A’s.
