Prep baseball: Bothell 5, Edmonds-Woodway 2

KENT — After a first-round win against Puyallup in the 4A state playoffs, Edmonds-Woodway’s season came to a disappointing end in a 5-2 quarterfinal loss to Bothell at Kent Memorial Park on Saturday. Austin Jones knocked a two-run home run in the first inning to put his Warriors up 2-0, before Bothell scored a run in the bottom half of the inning. The score was stuck at 2-1 in Edmonds-Woodway’s favor until the bottom half of the sixth, when Bothell rallied for a four-run inning.
“It was nice to get the first runs on the board, and I thought we were gonna keep the momentum, but it just didn’t happen,” said Edmonds-Woodway coach Dan Somoza.
Bothell’s Bryan McAfee hit an RBI-double to center field in the sixth inning to tie the score at 2-2, and his team went on to score three more runs on two more hits in the inning. McAfee was 2-for-2 with a double.
“They found some holes, and that’s the way it goes,” said Somoza of the big fourth inning. “Before you know it, they’re up.”
Derek Callahan batted 2-for-3 for Edmonds-Woodway with a double in the seventh inning, an inning where the Warriors had two runners on base before Ryan Budnick popped the ball up to left field for the third out of the inning.
Somoza said that his team had its chances, but just couldn’t capitalize when it needed to. Still, he is proud of his teams effort.
“We just couldn’t get that two-out hit. We left the bases loaded a couple of times,” he said. “But we played great. We battled all day long.”
