Ah, the merry, merry month of May is here. Even if your snowsuit caused you to trip as you frolicked through your Maypole dance. (Which is not the origin of the distress call, Mayday, Mayday, Mayday). Mother, may we look at the headlines?

•”Helicopters to land on Bellevue high-rise“: The City Council voted unanimously to approve downtown developer Kemper Freeman’s plan to land helicopters on a high-rise office building up to five times a week, the Seattle Times reported. The council wants rule

s requiring close review of flights to ensure they don’t violate the city’s noise ordinance or stray too frequently over residential parts of the downtown area. How thoughtfully after-the-fact of them.

Freeman is the Bellevue Square developer who is trying his hardest to derail the light-rail project along I-90 and through the city. Traffic isn’t a concern when you can fly your helicopter to work. Mass transit isn’t a concern when you’re a wealthy developer who can just fly above the proletariat’s petty problems. It takes a lot of malls to be that arrogant.

•”Lawmaker who slammed immigrant pot-smokers arrested on drug charge“: Sigmund Freud got a lot of things wrong. He also got a lot of things right. We all have our hypocrisies to be sure, but modern politicians seem determined to prove Freud’s theory of projection over and over again on the public stage.

In this case, Rhode Island’s House Minority Leader Robert Watson was arrested for alleged pot possession after being stopped at a DUI checkpoint. In February, the lawmaker was criticized after he said of the state’s General Assembly: “I suppose if you’re a gay man from Guatemala who gambles and smokes pot, you probably think that we’re onto some good ideas here.”

Some in Rhode Island are waiting for the other (tapping) shoe to drop.

•”Dan Rather criticizes royal wedding coverage“: He’s just mad he wasn’t hired to perform at the reception. The young royal couple rejected Rather and his garage band “Courage,” which only plays REM’s song “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?”

College campuses add language immersion programs“: Try it with preschoolers instead, and then we’ll be talking.

“‘Spoiled athlete’ Ryan Leaf says he should have stayed in school“: The former Washington State Cougar and famous NFL washout happened to announce his belated insight the same week that “Titans draft Jake Locker in first round.” Read more details in the next “Goofus and Gallant” strip in “Highlights” magazine.

“Man rips sink off bathroom wall at hospital”: Hospital spokeswoman Nurse Ratched said not to worry, she would take care of the culprit.
