Get you coming and going: The U.S. Transportation Department is telling airlines that it wants to change some rules, such as requiring better compensation for passengers bumped from flights, and a refund of baggage fees when airlines lose your luggage.

The airlines say they’ll agree to refund the baggage handling fee for lost luggage if they can assess a suitcase storage fee.

What’s your vector, Victor? The FAA said it has suspended a Reno, Nev., air-traffic controller who reportedly fell asleep on duty, forcing a medical flight to land without guidance. It was the second incident of sleeping controllers this month.

The nation’s airlines, responding to the problem, said they will offer flights with awake and alert air-traffic controllers for an additional charge of $35 for each take-off and landing.

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1910, President William Howard Taft, R-Capital Rotund, became the first U.S. president to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game between the Washington Senators and the Philadelphia Athletics.

Unfortunately, Taft was thrown out of the stadium when the umpire discovered the president had doctored the ball with grease from his handlebar mustache.
