SEC set sights on porn sites

This week includes the start of daylight saving time, St. Patrick’s Day, a full moon, and some kind of collegiate basketball competition. Giving everyone a reason to get out there and howl. Let’s review the headlines:

•”Porn-watching SEC workers disciplined, counseled“: The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has counseled or disciplined 24 employees who accessed pornographic sites on government computers between 2005 and 2010 as the economy fell apart, the Associated Press reported. No one was fired, naturally. The most frequently downloaded video, investigators reported, was something called “Fiddling While Rome Burns.”

Gingrich: Passion for nation factored in indiscretions“: Newt Gingrich says his passionate hard work for his country contributed to his marital infidelity, the Associated Press reported. Always consult your doctor for patriotism lasting more than four hours.

Chrysler ditches media agency over obscene tweet“: Chrysler fired New Media Strategies, the agency behind a disparaging tweet posted to Chrysler’s Twitter account, the Associated Press reported. The employee’s Tweet read: “I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the (hash)motorcity and yet no one here knows how to (expletive) drive.”

That certainly is a novel strategy — bashing your client’s home base, workers and customers in less than 140 characters, with room left to swear. Well done. Anyway, Chrysler’s “This is the Motor City, and this is what we do” TV commercial boasts of building cars, not driving them.

Speaking of that ad, do you notice the extra special tone of disdain heaped on the last city mentioned during this part: “Now, we’re from America, but this isn’t New York City or the Windy City or Sin City, and we’re certainly no one’s Emerald City.” Making Seattle sound sissy or something. Like it would refer to itself as MetroNatural or something.

So Seattle is firing back with some regional ads. A guy driving around in his hybrid making a Starbucks run says: “This isn’t the Lilac City. Or the Rose City. And we’re certainly no one’s City of Destiny.”

Spokane, Portlandia and Tacoma Tweeted back: Uh, you might want to rephrase that.

Other civic campaigns:

•Boise just likes to Twitter, “We ain’t no City of Saints.”

Vancouver, Washington, struggling to find a way to refer to itself without having to say Vancouver, Washington, recently rejected “… and we’re certainly no one’s Vancouver, B.C.”

Meanwhile, the editor of The Columbian newspaper advocated renaming the city “The Couv.” Hmm. (Sister cities: Wally and Lumpy). Why not just go with the trend and embrace “Vancouveria”?

•Everett knows a good ad when it sees one. “This is the Jet City and this is what we do…”
