Can’t compare founders with Confederates

In response to Bob Barker’s Sept. 4 letter to the editor, and his humorous suggestion that our founding fathers on our currency be replaced with Disney characters because they were slave owners: It is inconsequential that the founders of our country, who wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were slave owners. They created our country. The issue about the civil war statues is that they represent men who attempted to destroy our country.

The glorification of the Civil War “heroes” began when the Ku Klux Klan resurged after World War I, renewing their bigotry and racism toward African Americans and Jews, and it continued through the Jim Crow era into the 1960s civil rights battles.

Joining the KKK, other groups, white supremacists, skinheads, neo-Nazis, and the newest name Alt-right continue their hatred to this day and use the Civil War statues as one of their symbols.

Do not group Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton and Franklin with Robert E Lee and other Confederate leaders, it’s a foolish comparison.
