Community sports roundup: Local duo honored by WWU athletics

Cordell Cummings and Jeremiah Lee were deemed among the best Western Washington University athletics had to offer during the 2018-19 school year.
The Snohomish County pair were two of the six athletes honored with awards at the Dub Dub Blue Awards Ceremony held last Tuesday in Bellingham.
Cummings, a graduate of Arlington High School who is a junior on the men’s track and field team, was named the school’s Male Athlete of the Year. Cummings won three individual Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships, claiming the 60-meter hurdles at the Indoor Championships and both the 110 and 400 hurdles at the Outdoor Championships. He became just the second athlete in the conference’s 17-year history to sweep the hurdles titles.
Lee, a graduate of Grace Academy who’s a junior defender on the men’s soccer team, shared the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Lee started all 18 of the Vikings’ games, helping the team to an 11-6-1 record. In the classroom Lee carries a 3.68 grade-point average in business management and will graduate this spring.
Monroe Miracle League celebrating milestone
The Monroe Miracle League is celebrating a milestone Saturday, as the special baseball league for players with disabilities of all ages is holding its 20-year anniversary. The event takes place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rotary Field in Monroe. The celebration will also recognize the 10-year anniversary of Rotary Field.
More than 50 players are involved in the league. Members of the Monroe Police Department, Snohomish County Fire District 7, Rotary Club of Monroe, Monroe/Sky Valley Family YMCA and others will be on hand to participate in the celebrations.
Snohomish Summer Smash tennis returning
The fifth annual Snohomish Summer Smash tennis tournament is taking place July 26-28 at Snohomish High School. The tournament, which is for girls and boys ages 14-18, featured 65 players last year, including Anuj Vimawala of Jackson High School, who was a 4A state boys doubles champion this year. The entry fee is $30 for singles and $50 for doubles or mixed doubles, and the entry deadline is July 17. For more information, visit the tournament’s website at www.snohomishsummersmash.com.
Everett Rowing Association places 23rd at nationals
The Everett Rowing Association men’s youth 8+ boat placed 23rd at the USRowing Youth National Championships held Thursday through Sunday in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida. Everett placed 21st in the time trial, fifth in its repechage race, then placed fifth in the D Final.
