EVERETT — The Glacier Peak boys basketball team will carry a perfect 20-0 record into the postseason after outlasting a gutsy Mariner team 90-87 in double overtime Tuesday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Grizzlies, who finished 14-0 in Wesco 4A play, stormed back from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to take a two-point lead late in regulation, only to see Mariner’s Henry Avra hit a short jumper with seven seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
The Marauders (16-4 overall, 11-3 league) led by five in the first overtime and three in the second extra period, but Glacier Peak responded to each run Mariner made.
Glacier Peak’s Brayden Quantrille led all scorers with 24 points, and Tucker Molina tacked on 17 for the Grizzlies.
Avra led Mariner with 16, and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Simon Fanuel added 15 points and Tony MacArthur chipped in 14 for the Marauders.
Mariner’s 76-71 advantage in the first overtime was the largest for either team after regulation, as the teams went back-and-forth at each other.
Glacier Peak started slowly and made only one field goal in a five-point first quarter and trailed 31-19 at halftime, but like in its first matchup with Mariner on Jan. 27, the Grizzlies exploded late.
In beating Mariner 55-49 at home, Glacier Peak out-scored the Marauders 26-11 in the final period to earn the win.
Both teams earned first-round byes in the Wes-King Bi-District, and begin postseason play Saturday.
