Great Plant Pick: Crocus ‘Goldilocks,’ Goldilocks crocus

What: Crocus are a harbinger of spring. They bring a burst of color to the garden in very late winter to early spring. Crocus “Goldilocks” is easy to grow and long-lived with goblet-shaped flowers that are golden with a splash of burgundy on the outer petals. The wispy green foliage, with a thin silvery median, emerges right behind the flowers and expands as the blooms fade, then goes dormant in early summer making them quite drought tolerant.

Where: This hybrid cultivar is easily grown in average or medium moisture, well-drained soils and in full sun or light shade.

Size: Goldilocks large-flowering crocus grows to be about 4 to 6 inches tall and 5 inches wide when mature.

Care: You’ll see the best results if you plant these bulbs in the fall. The flowers only open when the sun shines or when there is a lot of light; they close up in rainy weather and at night. “Goldilocks” naturalizes easily and will come back year after year.
