What: Once a rare and much sought-after fern cultivar, Polystichum setiferum “Bevis” is a regal bouquet of large, arching fronds to 3 feet that are a lustrous dark green and with a feathery texture. Now Bevis’ soft shield fern is widely available and a treat for any garden with light, open or dappled shade. Plant in large multiples for a stately presence with other shade-loving perennials. With the fronds being evergreen, they are generally attractive throughout the winter in the Pacific Northwest, but they may be cut back in late February or March before the new growth begins to unfurl.

Where: Plant “Bevis” in light to open or dappled shade. The soil should be well draining, but rich in humus.

Size: This fern grows to be 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide when mature.

Care: Water Bevis’ soft shield fern regularly or frequently during dry periods. Cut the fronds to the ground in late February or early March.
