Brackets released for high school basketball state tournaments

With qualification and seeding finalized, the brackets for the high school basketball state tournaments were released Sunday afternoon.
The action begins with Class 3A play-in games on Tuesday, followed by the state regional round for every classification on Friday and Saturday.
And it culminates with next week’s Hardwood Classics, which take place March 2-5 in the Tacoma Dome (4A and 3A), Yakima Valley SunDome (2A and 1A) and Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena (2B and 1B).
For each classification, teams that qualified for state through their respective district tournaments were seeded by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s seeding committees.
The 4A, 2A, 1A, 2B and 1B state tournaments each consist of 16 teams, beginning with this weekend’s state regionals.
The 3A state tournaments have 20-team fields, due to there being more schools in the classification. In 3A, seeds 13-20 square off in play-in games Tuesday for spots in the state regional round. After that, the 3A tournament continues with the same 16-team format as the other classifications.
For each classification, the 16-team state regional round is split into two groups: seeds 1-8 and seeds 9-16.
Seeds 1-8 square off in non-elimination regional games, with both teams advancing to the Hardwood Classic. The reward for winning one of those regional contests is a bye into the state quarterfinals.
Seeds 9-16 play loser-out regional games, with the winners advancing to the Hardwood Classic.
The losers of the seed 1-8 games and winners of the 9-16 games meet in single-elimination contests in the first round of the Hardwood Classic. Those first-round winners then advance to the state quarterfinals.
From there, the Hardwood Classics take on an eight-team, modified double-elimination format — with one loss eliminating a team from title contention and two losses eliminating a team from the tournament.
Below are the play-in and state regional matchups for the 14 local state-bound teams.
