4A STATE TOURNAMENT
Winner to quarterfinals, loser to first round
Union 56, Mariner 46
BATTLE GROUND — After trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, sixth-seeded Mariner rallied to pull within six in the third quarter, but could not close the gap completely in a loss to No. 3 Union in a 4A state tournament non-elimination regional game on Saturday.
Naser Motley scored 14 points and Dakota Joseph added 10 for Mariner (16-9), which will face No. 11 Olympia in the first round of the Hardwood Classic on Wednesday.
Bryson Metz scored a game-high 22 points, Yanni Fassillis had 12 and Jamison Limbrick chipped in 10 as Union (19-5) advanced straight to next week’s state quarterfinals at the Tacoma Dome.

Olympia 64, Jackson 51
TUMWATER — Fourteenth-seeded Jackson fell to No. 11 Olympia in a 4A state tournament regional loser-out game on Saturday.
“One step from where we wanted to be, but SO PROUD of this group and thankful for great community, student, and admin support all year. Sad to see it end, looking forward to the future,” Jackson coach Steve Johnson posted on Twitter.
Jackson finished its season with a 14-10 overall record.
Olympia (23-5) advanced to the first round of the Hardwood Classic where it will face No. 6 Mariner on Wednesday.

Mountlake Terrace 67, Kelso 65 (OT)
MILL CREEK — The Mountlake Terrace boys basketball team never gave up with its back against the wall.
The ninth-seeded Hawks trailed for almost the entirety of regulation during their loser-out Class 3A state regional clash with 16th-seeded Kelso on Saturday, but the Hilanders couldn’t put Terrace away late.
And boy, did they pay for that.
Zaveon Jones sent the game to overtime with a layup at the buzzer, Jeffrey Anyimah sank clutch free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime, and the Hawks (18-2) overcame a 14-point third-quarter deficit to punch their ticket to the Tacoma Dome with an overtime victory over Kelso (15-9) at Jackson High School.

Ferris 64, Arlington 45
SPOKANE — Thirteenth-seeded Arlington led by three points after the first quarter, but No. 12 Ferris went on a 19-4 run in the second to take the lead and never looked back in a 3A state tournament regional loser-out game.
Arlington (18-6) went 13-1 in Wesco 3A/2A play this season and earned a state berth with a loser-out win over Cascade and then advanced with a big play-in win over Evergreen on Tuesday.
Ferris (17-5) advanced to the first round of the Hardwood Classic and will face No. 4 Rainier Beach on Wednesday.
2A STATE TOURNAMENT

Lakewood 61, Sammamish 53
EVERETT — Justice Taylor poured in 23 points, Andrew Molloy added 12 points and 16 rebounds and ninth-seeded Lakewood held on for a victory over 16th-seeded Sammamish in a loser-out Class 2A state regional game at Everett Community College.
Mason Weller chipped in eight points and Blake Conyers seven for Lakewood (15-6), which clinched its second straight trip to the Yakima Valley SunDome. It’s just the second time the Cougars have qualified for the Hardwood Classic in program history.
Zakarie Abdul Kadir, Rehan Luthra and Reuben Kizer scored 10 points apiece to lead the Redhawks (14-11).
The Cougars never trailed after opening the game on a 21-5 run but saw their lead dwindle to four in the final quarter after after Sammamish delivered a 13-5 run that made it 55-51 with 3:02 left.
Molloy scored a bucket in the post and Conyers knocked down four late free throws to seal the victory for Lakewood.

Garfield 67, Stanwood 44
BELLEVUE — Seventh-seeded Stanwood fell to undefeated No. 2 Garfield in a 3A state tournament regional non-elimination game.
Stanwood (12-5), which is making its third state appearance in the past five full-length seasons, will face No. 10 Auburn in the first round of the Hardwood Classic on Wednesday.
Garfield (18-0), the defending Class 3A state champion, automatically advanced to the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Hermiston 53, Everett 51
EVERETT — The Everett High School girls basketball team was oh-so-close to its first Tacoma Dome trip in more than a quarter-century.
But with a heartbreaking sequence in the final minute, the Seagulls’ dreams were crushed in agonizing fashion.
Izzy Simmons scored a game-tying layup with 30 seconds left and then banked in a game-winning floater at the buzzer, lifting No. 14 seed Hermiston to a win over No. 11 seed Everett in a Class 3A loser-out state regional game Saturday afternoon at Everett Community College.
