2016 Mitsubishi Lancer SEL: fun-to-drive workhorse
Published 7:30 am Friday, June 17, 2016
Mitsubishi is carving out a market niche with value-oriented models and the 2016 Lancer SEL compact sports sedan is no exception.
The Lancer is the workhorse for the Mitsubishi brand and is available in four fun-to-drive trim levels: ES, SE, SEL and GT. It has been an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick for seven consecutive years and comes with a fully transferable 5-year/60,000 mile new vehicle limited warranty.
My tester seats five adults and delivers 31 miles per gallon fuel economy down the highway as rated by the EPA.
Powered by a 2.4-liter DOHC, 16-valve, four-cylinder engine paired with a next-generation CVT transmission, the Lancer also includes the brand’s All-Wheel Control that drivers in Western Washington covet.
The new CVT powertrain delivers improved fuel efficiency, smoother operation, reduced noise, and better acceleration and shift performance than before. An AWC mode selector allows the driver to choose between 2WD, 4WD Auto and 4WD Lock options.
“The 2016 Lancer not only looks good with its updated styling, but it drives and performs at a level well beyond its value-oriented price point,” said MMNA executive VP, Don Swearingen. “The new Lancer builds upon the legacy of challenging what a compact car can be in terms of design, technology and performance, all at an affordable price.”
The Lancer exterior has been refreshed for this model year. My tester included a Labrador Black Pearl coat of paint along with a new front fascia with chrome grille, 16-inch alloy, two-tone wheels and LED running lights. Heated side-view mirrors and rain-sensing wipers are added touches.
Adding value for your hard-earned buck, the Lancer SEL included a lengthy list of standard convenience features including a 6.1-inch touch display that operates a 140-watt AM/FM/CD/USB audio system with five speakers, rear view camera, automatic air conditioning climate control, heated front seats, cruise control, Bluetooth and more.
A new front, center console serves as a handy armrest, with plenty of storage tucked away underneath so small possessions don’t get lost. Backseat passengers benefit from a center console with cupholders.
The trunk is more than just ceremonial, like some sports sedans. The trunk was large enough to accommodate golf bags with room to spare.
On the safety front, the Lancer SEL includes anti-lock braking, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, active stability control, traction control logic, tire pressure monitoring, seven air bags and a safety body construction system that absorbs energy to help protect passengers.
And, if you’re really looking for fun, there’s the GT.
The GT comes with a sport-tuned suspension, larger disc brakes, 18-inch wheels, sunroof and rear spoiler. It is available as a five-speed manual – or with the CVT8 automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
