Big Nate comic strip reflects realities of middle school

I disagree strongly with a recent letter to the editor and its characterization of the comic Big Nate. I find the strip to be quite funny, one of the strongest of the Herald’s thin selection of comic offerings.

While it does contain a fair amount of put-down humor, as does middle school, Nate is so full of himself that he is often the butt of the joke. The teachers who must suffer through Nate’s shenanigans (think Mrs. Godfrey) are usually shown to be wiser and acting as responsible adults by the end of the storyline.

As for misogyny, regular readers know that Nate has been recently smitten with a girlfriend who is clearly a couple of steps ahead of him.
