Protecting forests and prevent another landslide like Oso
Published 1:30 am Thursday, March 28, 2024
Thank you for the powerful and heartbreaking article about the Oso landslide tragedy (“After The Slide,” The Herald). I only hope it can teach a lesson that will prevent a repeat event.
The paper also featured a commentary about the need to protect a nearby forest above another steep slope (“Timber sales in county would destroy mature forests,” The Herald, March 23). The forest in the proposed sale, named Stilly Revisited, is important for the many reasons listed in the commentary. But it also plays a role in stabilizing the land it sits on, above a neighborhood below an even steeper slope than the Oso disaster.
