Photo of Everett mayor candidate Greene unflattering, unfair

I am writing to express my deep concern about the recent coverage of our mayoral candidates in a recent article (“NAACP president announces run for Everett mayor,” The Herald, May 22). The article about Dr. Janice Greene, who has entered the Everett Mayor’s race used an unflattering, casual photo of her in sunglasses, while the other two white candidates were represented with professional photos. This disparity in photo choice is extremely troubling and raises questions about racial bias and professionalism in your reporting.

Dr. Greene, who holds a doctorate degree, is not only highly educated but also brings a wealth of experience and dedication to our community. The use of a casual and less formal photo diminishes her professionalism and does not accurately represent her qualifications and capabilities. In contrast, the white candidates were portrayed in a manner that enhances their professional image, which can unfairly influence public perception and voter decisions.

It is essential for the media to provide fair and unbiased coverage of all candidates, ensuring that each one is presented in a manner that reflects their true qualifications and potential. By not doing so, you risk perpetuating harmful stereotypes and undermining the democratic process.

I urge you to correct this oversight and ensure that future coverage of all candidates is conducted with fairness and respect. It is crucial for the integrity of our community and the trust we place in our local media.
