The Everett Silvertips hit the halfway point of their six-game homestand with a pair of wins and a shutout loss.

Everett (33-6-2-1, 69 points) remains atop the WHL standings, and a full 10 points ahead of Penticton (26-9-4-3, 59 points) in the Western Conference with around one-third of the regular season remaining.

Everett 8, Moose Jaw 3

The Silvertips overcame a 2-0 deficit to storm past the visiting Warriors on Jan. 14. Moose Jaw scored twice in a 27-second span with goals from Kash Anderson and Aiden Ziprick to go up by two by the 3:17 mark of the first period.

It took nearly 13 minutes for Everett to get a response, when Clarke Schaefer took it himself and shot past two defenders off the rush to cut it to 2-1 at 16:02 of the first.

Jesse Heslop finally tied it for the Silvertips at 9:43 of the second, cycling around the zone and taking a short pass from Landon DuPont before firing a rocket from the high slot. Jaxsin Vaughan cashed in the go-ahead tally on a breakaway at 16:16 of the second.

Everett scored four more goals to build up a 7-2 lead by 15:05 of the third period before Moose Jaw scored once more at 15:44, but Henri Ament answered back just 10 seconds later with his first career WHL goal to secure the 8-3 final.

Spokane 4, Everett 0

After Sam Oremba put the visiting Chiefs ahead 1-0 at 14:07 of the first period, the Silvertips spent the entire second period chasing a tying goal before Spokane scored three third-period goals to put the game out of reach.

Chiefs forward Owen Martin’s effort winning the puck in the neutral zone and along the side boards entering Everett’s zone set him up for a cross-ice pass to Tyus Sparks, who fired home a one-timer to give Spokane a 2-0 lead at 4:51 of the third period.

Chase Harrington added a power-play goal at 15:16, and Martin added a goal for himself at 17:56. Spokane goaltender Carter Esler recorded 29 saves in the shutout, snapping the Silvertips’ four-game winning streak.

After getting shut out the night before, the Silvertips bounced back in a big way, scoring three goals in the first 4:17 of their Saturday night matchup against the Giants.

Nolan Chastko scored off the faceoff at 2:00 before Zackary Shantz cashed in on the power play 36 seconds later. Lukas Kaplan closed off the run with a rebound goal, which snapped a 16-game goal drought for the 18-year-old forward.

Sam Charko put Vancouver back within two to spoil Anders Miller’s shutout at 9:24 of the first period, but Everett held off several big pushes by the time Carter Bear scored the final goal at 15:02 of the third period.

Three Stars of the Week:

First Star: Lukas Kaplan. The 18-year-old forward assisted Everett’s opening goal in Wednesday’s 8-3 win against Moose Jaw and finished off the early scoring run in Saturday’s 4-1 win against Vancouver, where he was named First Star of the game. He also maintained an even rating in Friday’s 4-0 loss to Spokane.

Second Star: Clarke Schaefer. The 18-year-old forward’s two-goal performance in Wednesday’s 8-3 win over Moose Jaw earned him First Star of the game.

Third Star: Landon DuPont. The 16-year-old defenseman registered three assists in Wednesday’s 8-3 win against Moose Jaw.

The week ahead

The Silvertips have three home games once again, with Kelowna coming to town on Wednesday before Brandon and Seattle come in for a weekend back-to-back. Everett is 3-0-0-0 against Kelowna this season, and Seattle is 1-1-0-0. Friday will mark the only matchup between the Silvertips and Brandon this season.
