The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is mid-size crossover SUV is what you would call a “bread and butter” vehicle for General Motors.

Designed to appeal to a broad audience with a multitude of interests and needs, Equinox has been the best-selling non-pickup truck in the Bow Tie brands fleet the last several years. Its practical – not flashy – with a long list of creature comforts and driver assistance features that add value for prospective customers.

My tester was the RS trim level with all-wheel drive. Powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to six-speed automatic transmission, Equinox packs enough punch to get by, while delivering 30 miles per gallon down the highway, a plus in our inflation-fueled economy.

The crossover seats up to five adults, with plenty of cargo room to stow cargo, luggage, golf clubs, or Saturday morning grocery shopping. If more room is required, lower the split-fold second-row seats flat to reveal even more volume and space.

My ride came with three options: A leather package ($1,580) that included jet black leather appointed seats, and a Bose premium, seven-speaker audio system; Infotainment package ($895) that adds heated steering wheel, USB data ports, 120-volt power outlet, navigation system with eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The third option is an advanced safety package ($650) that delivers HD surround vision, outside heated mirrors with LED turn signals, and adaptive cruise control.

The vehicle’s overall ride and handling is very good thanks to a solid suspension that gives the Equinox a surprisingly smooth ride over various road surfaces, including gravel or dirt. The Equinox might not look like it has a lot of driving flair, but it’s well tuned to the demands of everyday driving.

The Equinox is an easily maneuverable vehicle with good, responsive steering and excellent braking power. And all-wheel drive makes it a functional ride in all four Northwest seasons including treks over the mountain passes. The Equinox is an easily maneuverable vehicle with good, responsive steering and excellent braking power.

Other interior features include dual-zone air conditioning, keyless start and entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Sirius XM radio, 4G LTE W-Fi, and a power rear lift gate operated by the key fob.

The Equinox exterior is dressed up with a “Blue Glow Metallic” coat of enamel, 19-inch black aluminum wheels and roof black roof rails, door handles that match body panels, and a unique grill with the Chevy Bowtie and badging all in black.

Numerous safety and security features create even more value for Equinox drivers. The package is comparable to vehicles priced way higher than this American made product.

Highlights include automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, auto high beam, front and rear brake assist, rear cross-traffic alert, theft deterrent system, teen driver mode, and side blind zone alert.
