All-electric technology is undeniably advancing with every generation. And infrastructure is coming to more widely support early adopters and the hoards to follow.
The 2022 Jaguar I-PACE, the first all-electric performance SUV from a premium manufacturer, now offers a new fast, intuitive infotainment system and quicker charging capability, making owning and driving an electric vehicle easier than ever. My tester was the EV400 HSE model.
Being the rookie I am, I experienced one snafu. But that’s just me.
Since its debut, I-PACE has won dozens of global awards, including 2019 World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, and World Green Car, reinforcing its status as the Jaguar vehicle that tore up the rule book to become the first and best electric car of its kind.
With a Jaguar-designed electric motor at each axle, producing exceptional combined performance of 394 hp and 512 lb-ft of torque, I-PACE offers an unrivaled balance of all-wheel drive performance, refinement, luxury, and day-to-day usability.
Range is set at 250 miles, but will be lower in the real world based on driving habits and use of accessories like heat, air conditioning, windshield wipers, headlights, music, etc.
I-PACE now comes with an 11kW on-board charger as standard. Connecting to a 100-kW DC charger can replenish up to 63 miles of range in 15 minutes. I-PACE remains the all-electric performance SUV, thanks to its aluminum construction, low center of gravity and its 394hp dual-motor design, accelerating from 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds.
I drove the I-PACE down to around 60 miles before plugging it into an outlet in my garage behind our extra refrigerator. A message popped up that it would require 54 hours to achieve a full charge – not exactly overnight.
The next morning my wife plugged in her hair dryer in our upstairs bathroom and flipped the circuit breaker. She went downstairs to our powder room and proceeded to flip the breaker again. After that, her beauty routine changed and l-PACE was left on charge except when needed.
In practicality, most electric vehicles are still confined to city driving and short trips. But some manufacturers have extended range to 400+ miles, making them everyday drivers.
I loved how the Jaguar drove. The torque was amazing. From a standing start, I-PACE darts off the starting line, with plenty of power in reserve to accelerate even at freeway speeds for passing, or just showing off.
Comfort and convenience features are provided en masse. My favorites were the Windsor leather seats, Meridian 3D, 380-watt, surround system, fixed panoramic roof, 10-inch TouchPro screen with Pro Infotainment system, and heads up display.
That barely scratches the surface, as I-PACE provides all of the expected bells and whistles, and then some.
Completing the package is a number of safety, security and driving aids to deliver confidence in any driving situation. All-wheel drive, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, emergency
braking assist, blind spot assist, rear traffic monitor, clear exit monitor and rear camera all combine to ensconce driver and all five passengers in a protective bubble.
Admittedly an electric naysayer at first, I can now see myself owning one of these modern day miracles in my lifetime.
